Born and raised in the tight knit Far North community of Awarua, Geoff Popham knew from a young
age the writing (or art) was on the wall - he was going to be an Artist.
“Spending time at our Whanau marae, and being taught by my elders about the carvings and paintings
on the walls, I developed a deep love and appreciation for our culture's unique and beautiful visual
language. I knew at age 4 that I wanted to tell stories with pictures too.”
That love for visual storytelling inspired Geoff to pursue Art as a career. Geoff has explored a number of
artistic mediums, from whakairo (carving) to print making, photography, and sculpture, but his first
love of painting remains his favored discipline with Watercolor and Acrylic his preferred Mediums.
His style is a combination of tribal art and surrealism, utilizing the rich history and mana of Maori
design, and placing it with images from nature. Also with recent work including Watercolor Painting
series of native New Zealand Birds.
Geoff, wife Jamie, their son JJ (9) and daughter Taylor(5), live in Lyall Bay, on Wellington’s South
Coast. There, Geoff works from his studio as a Freelance Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Painter,
working on projects that vary from logos for large corporate clients to his all ages
Coloring Book,MANU - Color the Birds of Aotearoa.
His work can be found in homes and businesses throughout Aotearoa and the World.
